Sam and Colleen Haffar

CDG has allowed us to efficiently navigate the overwhelming number of decisions required to build a custom home. We were extremely impressed by their initial presentation and continued to be impressed by their organization and streamlined approach throughout the process. Each major step in our journey was marked by a well thought-out presentation of options and ideas that kept us focused. Collaborative Design Group (CDG) has the most incredible ownership and staff, whose friendly, relaxed attitudes make the entire process a pleasure. They bring an expertise to the table without forgetting to listen to their customers’ needs, making it a truly collaborative design process. We highly recommend CDG to anyone looking to simplify, enhance, and make the process of building a home a great and fun experience!

About

Collaborative Design Group is a full service architecture and interior design firm specializing in high-end residences and small commercial projects.

An Overview

The principals, Mickey and Mark Bufalini, each have over three decades of experience in their respective fields. Our combined architecture and interior design expertise allow us a unique niche in the Residential Architecture/Design process.  Our distinctive method of combining detailed specifications and construction documents allow for probably the most accurate bidding possible for a new home.  In this market where every dollar counts, we feel this amount of detail gives our clients peace of mind when launching one of the most expensive endeavors of their lifetime. Our clients find the finished product to be a residence that furnishes beautifully and meets their needs and expectations without compromise.  We believe in spending the time required designing a project so that the time spent in their home is enjoyable, satisfying and without regret.

Based in Houston with a majority of current projects in Texas, our jobs also reach as far as New Mexico, California, Colorado, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Florida.

Our Philosophy

At CDG we endeavor to anticipate the needs of our client as well as the builder and subcontractors working on a project. We feel it is not only our responsibility to be the creative driver of a project, but a reasonable participant, a firm that is cognizant of how important our timely interaction is to a successful project.

To us, success is measured by a client that is proud of the way their project looks upon completion, a budget that was respected, and a builder that found us competent, professional and above all, easy to work with.

Our Mission

We will continually strive to keep our creativity fresh, our thinking flexible, and our perspectives unique in order to bring our clients the very best design each and every time. Collaborative Design Group will always create rooms that are transformed not by chance or whim, but with an inspired execution of the design process and with clearly defined programs that employ the disciplines, details, and expertise that one expects from their Design Professional.

Our Team

Professionals you can Trust

As our name implies, we believe in collaboration and we have gathered a team of Architects, Interior Designers, and Support Staff that bring a combined strength of experience and creativity to our firm.  We are proud to introduce our staff, team members who are successful and energetic and who are consistently generating both smart and compelling design solutions for every project.

Mark Bufalini - Creative Director of Architecture

MarkMark Bufalini, AIA is one of the founding partners of Collaborative Design Group Architecture along with his wife, Mickey. Mark received his Bachelors of Architecture degree from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and is a Registered Architect in both New Jersey and Texas. Mark has over 30 years of architecture and design experience in both the public and private sector. As a young architect, he began working on a prestigious portfolio of work including the Pittsburgh Zoo, Three Rivers Stadium and worked to bring the historical row homes of Pittsburgh back to their former glory. Mark relocated to Texas where he met and married Mickey. Mark worked in the multifamily residential sector before moving to New Jersey after getting married. His attention was then redirected to include the design of many prestigious residences in the New York and New Jersey area where he honed his skills in the high end residential market on the east coast.
Upon his return to Texas, Mark spent a decade as the Senior Vice President of Design for a national top 50 home builder. Mark was brought in to overhaul the production housing market in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Austin. One of his first projects was to develop the first brownstone and row house subdivisions, 3 and 4 story row and single family homes in the Midtown area near downtown Houston. Mark spearheaded cost effective designs, and with the creative use of limited square footage and space, he was able to create and design new floor plans. His creative touch continued through the rest of the production house categories of the company.
When Mark began Collaborative Design Group in 2006, he was experienced in all phases of the architectural process. Mark’s work is characterized by integrating innovative and original design ideas into his client’s homes. His strengths include collaborative problem solving skills and developing lifestyle designs that endure through his aesthetic integrity.

Mark believes in staying current with continuing education courses throughout the year which satisfies his hunger for learning, he is an avid photographer and is taking courses to perfect his skills. Along with his passion of architecture, design and photography, Mark is dedicated to community involvement by serving on various foundation boards, working with Helping a Hero, or donating his time to church and various charitable organizations. Mark embraces all architectural challenges, and his enthusiasm for design is contagious.

Micky Bufalini - Creative Director of Design
MICKEYAs the other founding partner of Collaborative Design Group, Mickey Bufalini is dedicated to forming personal relationships with each and every one of her clients. She gives each of her design projects her personal attention and aims to prioritize her client’s own preferences for style and color over her own, thereby creating unique, comfortable and timeless designs. As principal and lead interior designer for Collaborative Design Group Interiors, she has built a formidable enterprise by encouraging creativity among her team of professionals who are consistently furthering their education in construction detail, interior design and interior specification.
Mickey always knew she wanted to pursue her passion for design, sired from a family of prolific artists, she was encouraged by a remarkable teacher in high school, where she studied Interior Design as an elective. She went on to get her Bachelor of Science in Interior Design with a minor in Art History at Stephen F. Austin University. After college, she relocated to the New York area with her new husband, an architect. Together their architectural and design collaboration trained Mickey to become extremely adept in architectural and interior specifications for new home construction. She and her family have traveled throughout Europe and Mickey is continually enthused by her love of architecture and design and believes these are the cornerstones to her continued inspiration. Equipped with the vital experience gained from her challenging work in the architectural world, she has developed a unique combination for an Interior designer-one with a love of texture, colors, furniture and history, along with a unique ability to tie it to the architectural finishes and details required of both the exterior and interiors of a home.

Mickey places particular importance on client satisfaction, and with over 30 years of experience in the Interior Design Industry, Mickey instills client confidence that their project will be finished timely and with complete client satisfaction.

Kendall’s previous work experiences include design and architecture assistance for a local residential and hospitality architecture firm, a local paint contracting company and an internship in New York City for an acclaimed Interior Design firm. Her various work experiences have helped her understand the collaborative effort it takes to create someone’s dream space and to appreciate each skill for their specialty. Kendall is inspired by fashion, traveling and different cultures that she incorporates into her designs in various ways. She is most passionate about incorporating textures, patterns and pulling together all of the colors of a space to really showcase a client’s personality and, like Wearstler said above, “add spice.” She is an active member of ASID and is currently working towards her NCIDQ certification to become a licensed designer.

Architecture

You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand… - Woodrow T. Wilson

Mark Boutros, Boutros construction

I am a custom home builder / remodeler in the Houston and surrounding areas, specializing in large multi-million dollar home projects. I am not easily impressed nor give compliments that are undeserved, however, I was instantly impressed when I met Mark Bufalini on a 20,000 square foot project that we worked on together. He showed me that he has the skills and the knowledge to achieve what the home owner wants without sacrificing function and doing so without an arrogant flare that you may find with other top level architects.

Like the foundation of your home, you will build your new residence on the work of your Architect. His creativity, talent, problem solving skills, and the ability to listen will guide the creation of a structure that is tailored to you. For over 30 years we have helped our clients create distinctive homes that are infused with innovative, unique styling, meeting their individual needs.  We strive to keep our creativity fresh, our thinking flexible, and our perspective unique in order to bring our clients the very best design each and every time.

We have a very exclusive approach to Architecture because of our close interaction with our Interior design department.  Our Architectural design process begins from the inside out, determining how you will function and live in your home.  We then drape the exterior of your home in any design or period style you prefer. We feel our Architecture allows for the most efficient designs with space that is “right sized” for the requisite function.

Based in Houston with a majority of current projects in Texas, our jobs also reach as far as New Mexico, California, Colorado, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Florida.

CDG Client

We met Mickey in 1997 on our first project and have used her exceptional design skills on 2 homes here in Houston. We gave her complete control of both projects and she was not only able to understand our wants, needs, dreams and desires, but she was fully capable of executing them on both projects with the builders, their subs, and all the other contractors involved in such large projects.

From time to time, I create power points and word documents to educate my clients about particular aspects of interior design and home construction.  These help them understand each topic and help them make better decisions about what they want in their own homes. The first one that I am publishing is about the different types, […]

If you are thinking about building a new home, there are a lot of sources available to obtain floor plans from.  There are plan services that offer semi-custom designs in a variety of styles, sizes and price ranges.  They often offer some ability to customize their layouts, but these are mostly meant to be off […]

Man has always sought shelter for himself, from the earliest use of caves, earthen structures and teepees; to today’s monumental buildings and skyscrapers.  In every case, those structures were the result of the imaginative desire to control our environment.  Historically, these were done by the master builders of each generation, and it has only been in the last century that the term architect has evolved and is now a licensed professional.

Architects are the creative force behind the organization of space; translating the needs of their client into the built environment.   It is one of the few professions that

What is the Interior Designer’s Role?

An Interior Designer is more than just someone who coordinates fabrics, furniture, draperies and accessories.

While most clients hire designers for that particular expertise, they are really getting someone capable of so much more.  Degreed Professional Interior Designers are trained to see the big picture and to help balance their clients’ objectives, functional needs and budget. Most people building or renovating a home do not fully understand the role that the Interior Designer can play in the process, and therefore, fail to get the Interior Designer involved soon enough.

If you don’t change the way you have always done something, the result won’t change either…

Typically when one is building a custom home, the process starts with the selection of an architect who will design a home that the client has asked for, then a builder is hired to estimate the costs of construction and begin the building process, and lastly, an Interior Designer is hired to facilitate selections and help the client make the necessary decisions during construction.   By following what has become this traditional course of action, you end up with the typical results – a project that is over budget, delayed due to last minute decision making, and a project that rarely satisfies all the client objectives because of sacrifices along the way.

A big reason for that is

As children, we appreciated the allowance that we got from our parents on a regular basis.  It was meant to pay us for miscellaneous chores around the house, following family rules, getting good grades, etc.  Mom and Dad had a great deal going there, because no matter what they needed us to do, our allowance usually didn’t change.  The same cannot be said in the construction industry.  The typical construction budget or bid has very quantifiable components that the builder can accurately calculate, but this budget is also filled with allowances for categories that are based on variable elements or personal preferences.  These allowances are not fixed limits, just guesstimates for how much it is assumed that you will spend.

By bringing the creative team of architect, client, interior designer and even builder together at the beginning of the design process,

Today’s construction industry is looking for business opportunities and is welcoming those financially sound customers with some great deals.  If you can afford to build right now, you will never find more contractors and suppliers willing to work with you on price.  We have found that at the height of the construction boom, it was […]

CONTEMPORARY KITCHEN

When building a home, 80% of the impact is achieved with the last 20% of the budget. Have you ever walked up to a home and admired the roof?  Probably not, a roof is an extremely important element in home building, used to cover and protect your home from the elements and certainly needs to have a proper warranty and suit the architectural style of the home.  However, it can be argued that a roof doesn’t make as much visual impact to the house as perhaps the flooring on the inside of the home that you walk on and view every day.

It is essential to make educated decisions throughout the construction process so that you do not
